1. WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
March
In March 2007 WHM will celebrate the many successful and joyous collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous women. WHM will be the curtain raiser to the celebration, later in May, of the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum which removed the clause from Australia's Constitution discriminating against Aboriginal people. It was the women who worked on this long campaign that inspired us to find more stories of women working together to bring about change in large and small ways. 4. BRISBANE IWD UNIFEM BREAKFAST (BRISBANE)
7th March
Our Guest Speaker is Malalai Joya, a 28 year old Parliamentarian from Afghanistan. This event will support violence against women projects in the Pacific Region. Malalai Joya, described by the BBC as "the most famous woman in Afghanistan" is the youngest member of the Afghani Parliament. Joya is reviled by fundamentalists but viewed by her constituents as a freedom fighter and heroine in contemporary Afghanistan. Poets have praised her, musicians have set the poems to music. 28 year old Malalai Joya gained her seat with the overwhelming majority of votes of the women and men of Farah province in the far west. She has made it her duty to improve women's rights and expose the criminals in government. In December 2003 she caused uproar during the inaugural session of the Constitutional Council when she denounced its fundamentalist members and said: "They were the most anti-women people in the society who brought our country to this state and they intend to do the same again. I believe that it is a mistake to test those already being tested. They should be taken to a national and international court." Her comments generated death threats and forced Malalai to change houses every week. For more information visit her website http://www.malalaijoya.com/. 10. CULTIVATING THE ART OF SAFE SPACE BY DR MARY ANN HUNTER
Friday 09 March
Transforming conflict, particularly at the community level, is often predicated on the notion of “safe space” in which to begin dialogue and explore non-violent futures. Safe space is also a desired foundation for collaborative creativity: space in which to take risks, and “giv[e] birth to that which does not yet exist” (Lederach ix). Yet, “safe space” is a slippery concept, rarely defined. In art-making and peace-building, what is it that makes space safe without losing the creative potential of tension? What role is there for risk? And, once achieved, how does safe space become meaningful beyond its immediate community of participants? This paper explores the function of safe space in performance and peace-building work by considering how it gets created – both literally and metaphorically – particularly in contexts where racial and cultural conflict exist. A collaborative hip hop project with indigenous, non-indigenous and refugee communities is examined for its cultivation of a risky safe space in which the messy negotiations of building peace were made. 1 - 2 pm (can extend to 2:30pm if required) Level 4, Room 437 Michie Building (#9) (See Map) St. Lucia Campus, University of Queensland

15. HELPING YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY
12 March 2007
An inspirational day with economic development authority Dr Ernesto Sirolli at Noosa. How do you nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in communities in regional areas and including disadvantaged groups such as the young, unemployed, indigenous and women re-entering the workforce? What can you do to inspire bottom-up economic development in local communities? What are the alternatives to programmes’, ‘initiatives’ and ‘one-size-fits-all’ business support offerings, that you can apply in your local community? As policy makers and civic leaders all over the world have discovered, nobody has done more to engage with, and provide answers to, these questions than Ernesto Sirolli. Dr Sirolli has worked all over the world, helping communities turn their dreams into successful businesses. NISER (Noosa Institute for Socio-Economic Research) has invited Dr Sirolli to share his vision with Australian communities.

Women lawyers fight India's rapists in court
Topic: Violence Against Women
Source: Tiscali
A female crime fighting unit is trying to stem the tide of sexual attacks against women in India, where up until recently rapists were almost never punished for their crimes. The victims often refuse to pursue their attackers through the courts due to threats, pay-offs, or out of shame in their traditional society which often blames the victim for the attack. "It’s not an easy job trying to bring these people to justice. But we are at it, as this is the beginning of a longer process to address this menace," said female lawyer Aparna Bhat, who heads the "Rape Crisis Cell". (03/05/07)

China Can No Longer Hide AIDS Crisis
Thursday , February 15, 2007
By Wendy McElroy
“What can they do to an old woman like me?" That’s how 80-year-old Gao Yaojie responds to threats from the Chinese government. In 1996, the now-retired doctor became instrumental in exposing an AIDS scandal involving China's blood banks that officials still want to quash. But the powerful Communist bureaucracy that rules a nation of 1.3 billion people cannot silence one old lady who is a crusade.
